The Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) marks its 50th anniversary as a key global treaty preventing the development and use of biological weapons. With 188 member states, it plays a crucial role in stopping the spread of dangerous biological agents.

As biotechnology rapidly advances, the risk of misuse increases. To address this, the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) is working with countries, especially in the Asia-Pacific region, to strengthen the BWC and ensure its implementation.

On the 26th of March, the 50th anniversary of BWC entry into force, the significance of the BWC and the need to enhance its implementation is gaining momentum in the international community.

Since biological threats can cross borders, reinforcing the BWC is essential for global security. Stronger cooperation and engagement will help protect from the danger of biological weapons.
