On 17 January 2025, Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu, UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, addressed participants of the 5th Annual Disarmament and International Security Fellowship and Indian Foreign Service Officer Trainees.

In her remarks, Ms. Nakamitsu reflected on the historical significance of disarmament in shaping global peace and security. She also addressed the current challenges facing multilateralism, including geopolitical tensions and emerging threats such as advanced technologies in warfare.

Despite these challenges, she emphasized the need to revitalize cooperation and build trust among nations. The High Representative called for innovative approaches and strengthened diplomacy to advance disarmament goals.

Speaking to the young diplomats and fellows, she urged them to take an active role in shaping a safer, more secure future, emphasizing the importance of dialogue, collaboration, and adherence to international law.
