KATHMANDU, 22 May (Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament) – The United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific (UNRCPD) and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) jointly organized a round-table meeting to review the National Action Plan (NAP) on the implementation of United Nations Security Council resolution 1540 (2004) of Uzbekistan. The meeting took place from 22 to 24 May 2017 in the OSCE Head Quarters in Vienna, Austria

Representatives of ministries and state agencies of Uzbekistan responsible for implementing resolution 1540 (2004) met with the representatives of the Expert Group of the Security Council Committee established pursuant to resolution 1540 (2004), UNRCPD, the OSCE and other international organizations to share experiences and assess achievements in their work.

The Government of Uzbekistan is working to implement most of the national measures set out in the NAP which was adopted on 18 January 2017.  The meeting provided an opportunity for the national officials to reflect with international experts on the progress in its implementation. Participants further focused on updating the NAP and complementing it with new national measures with a view to prevent the proliferation of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear weapons and their means of delivery to non-State actors. Special attention was given to the role of national stakeholders in ensuring continued progress and to the coordination of efforts by the relevant international organizations in providing assistance.

This event was implemented as part of the UNODA-OSCE Joint Project for Regional Implementation of UNSCR-1540 in Central Asia and Mongolia.
