Meeting with Secretary General of BIMSTEC for future cooperation

On 30 June 2016, in Bangkok, Thailand, Mr. Yuriy Kryvonos, the Interim Director of UNRCPD, had a meeting with Ambassador Sumith Nakandala, the Secretary General of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), a regional organization comprising seven Member States in South Asia and Southeast Asia covered by UNRCPD’s mandate. Opportunities for cooperation between BIMSTEC and UNRCPD were discussed, including counter terrorism and the promotion of implementation of the United Nations Security Council resolution 1540 (2004), small arms control, peace and disarmament education, and the Sustainable Development Goals (regarding reducing illicit arms flows). Concrete steps of cooperation in the future were also considered during the meeting.
