“Children and Peace” was the theme of the 2012 Art Competition for young people, took place from 15 July to 31 August 2012, in Kathmandu, Nepal, organized by the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Asia and the Pacific (UNRCPD).

The main objective of this art competition was to promote peace and disarmament education for schoolchildren, increase awareness and better understanding of peace and disarmament issues at the individual, local and international levels, and have the children reflect on their role in a peaceful society through drawing.

The art competition was participated by 383 schoolchildren from six public schools (grades 5-8) of Kathmandu Valley. The criteria of creativity, composition, theme and technique were used to judge the drawing. A finalist from each of the four grade categories was chosen, from which one finalist was named the overall winner. Award ceremony and exhibition of the top 40 drawings was organized on the International Peace Day, 21 September 2012 at the UN House in Kathmandu, Nepal. The winner and his school received a cash prize, as well as the three runners up also received a small prize. All six participating schools received small gifts and the students received a certificate of participation.
